I am writing this article in December which is probably a bad time of year to be discussing weight loss with all the Christmas party’s and family get together’s going on in our daily lives. I know myself that my own weight has been affected and not positively either.
I will go ahead and write this article anyway because come January a great many of us will be looking for ways to take off the pounds we added on during the holiday season myself included. Anyway how can we turn down Christmas cookies bought over to us from family members, i know i cannot.
Whether we are male or female losing weight is not an easy accomplishment especially as we increase in age. For many of us we feel like just throwing our hands up in the air and giving up all together because of the past failures.
However there is some steps we can take to turn the tide in our favor and start to see the scale move in a downward direction. Below i will give some ideas on how to this in a healthy way.
Concentrate On Food Before Anything Else
There is a old saying which says we are what we eat. Now it is very difficult to eat a diet of salads and other greens day after day with no end in sight. But in reality we do not have to diet this way to see weight loss come to fruition.
When starting a new way of eating healthy (I really dislike the word diet) it is essential to take a few necessary steps to ensure this happens.
Eat Breakfast Always
When you get up in the morning after a being asleep the first thing your body will want is nourishment to kick start your day.
I remember my own dad skipping breakfast when was young and i could never figure out how he did this. Doing this means you will be snacking all day long because of feeling hungry. In my fathers case he would basically eat minimally at lunch and then eat a big dinner and then snack all night long after dinner.
Not a good way to be fit. He some how got away with it though because he always looked pretty fit and trim. He would go workout for 45 minutes at the local YMCA on his lunch hour and eat a salad in the cafeteria before going back to work.
This was his regiment and he did it for 27 years. It worked for him but i really think it would have worked even better if he would have just eaten breakfast. To this day he only eats breakfast on Saturday’s when he and my mom go out to eat a local diner.
Why Eat Breakfast Everyday?
It is been verified by research that eating breakfast daily jump starts your metabolism and allows your body to burn more calories. It also stabilizes your blood sugar levels. When you do not eat for several hours because of sleep you body fuels itself on glucose released from the liver. Because of this when you rise up from bed your glucose levels can be lower than normal. A breakfast of proteins and grains are a great way to start the day.
Keeping it simple is key here on what to eat for breakfast. It can be grabbing some yogurt from your local store. There are so many flavors to choose from that include fruit and crunchy grains to sprinkle on top.
It can be cold cereal with ample amounts of grains to help with digestive issues while also reducing blood cholesterol to help lower the risk of heart disease. It could also be oat meal which is among the best foods to eat for breakfast.
Putting fruit on top of your cereal like blueberry’s or something else provides antioxidants which are beneficial for protecting your cells against free radicals that play a role in you developing cancer, and other diseases.
Drink Plenty of Water
Our body is made up of roughly 60 percent water. Drinking water everyday does many things you would not believe. Now you could drink soda’s or juices. The problem with drinking too much of these other alternatives is that they are high in sugars and calories. Drinking these alternatives should be done as sparingly as possible.
Keeping hydrated is important and water is the best way to achieve this. Drinking water throughout the day keeps our cells functioning properly, especially muscle cells, keeping them from getting fatigued.
Lastly drinking water can help with weight loss by helping us feel full longer.
Make Sure To Sleep
Sleep can be vastly overlooked when it comes to being healthy and staying fit. It is a proven fact that sleep helps to keep our immune system functioning properly. When we get run down because of not getting proper sleep we are often compromising our body’s ability to fight off sickness.
Getting enough quality sleep helps your repair your body both mentally and physically. When you do not get enough rest the night before you are not going to be able to function at a high level in anything you are trying to accomplish. It has been documented that prolonged periods of sleep deprivation can lead to heart disease and weight gain.
Get In The Habit Of Exercising Daily
Finding the time to workout everyday is vital to well being especially as we increase in age. Even if you only workout for a half hour a day that is enough to maintain the consistency needed to stave off weight gain and make us feel good about ourselves. It could be simply doing squats, sit-ups, and push-ups.
Doing this alone even three times per week in a circuit training format for 20 minutes with 10 minutes to stretch out and cool down would be putting all of your major muscle groups in play. This group of exercises can be done from home with no equipment needed. Just a suggestion and then the other two or three days you could walk or jog for the same amount of time.
It does not matter what you do just do something that you like to do that gets your heart rate up and sweating if possible. Now you may have to work up to this but just take it step by step. If you have not been physically active for a while get your doctor’s approval first before starting a regiment.
Never Stop Working Out
Once you get in the habit of training on a regular bases make it i a lifestyle. When you are trying to lose weight or just maintain it eating healthy and working out go hand in hand. The reason for this is that you are not going to always eat perfect. Working out on a regular basis makes it ok to cheat a little here or there.
You won’t feel like working out sometimes on your days to train. That is going to happen. It happens to me but if you can push through that and complete your workout no matter what it is you will be glad you did when you are finished.
